HILLWOD 25 is nuts .. but nuts is good, especially when it comes to hills and stairs! It’s simply as many stairs as possible in one day.
Go up as many stairs as possible in a single day. if you are repeating a staircase, then down steps count as half steps. If you’re doing this in July 2015 or wish to repeat the July 2015 Hillseeker Challenge, then these stairs count toward your 10K in the month goal.
- Your choice on walking or running, based on your level and the stairs you have access to.
- This challenge is suitable for indoors or out. It doesn’t have to be in the mountains … actually you get major kudos from me if you do this in your house or office building!

Notes from Jeff’s test run of this HILLWOD: I did this one on a very special staircase in the Berner Oberland of Switzerland. It’s called Niesen and at 11.674 steps, it’s the longest set of stairs in the world. The max incline is 68% and it’s about 3.5KM from bottom to top. Vertical elevation gain is 1600m. It took 2 hours to cover the stairs, which were a mix of very old (100 years old!) blocks and suspended (sometimes spooky) metal stairs. I carried my Alphorn up as well, because there are few things I enjoy more than mixing mountains, physical exertion, good friends and playing music with a mountain view! Here’s a link to more photos from this epic stair climb.
Have a great hill workout!
