Hey there,
It’s been a while. Two years, give or take.
I didn’t plan on going quiet. But if you’re going to hear from me after all this time, it should be worth opening.
Here’s what happened.
Since I last wrote, I sold almost everything I owned, packed what was left, and Anja and I moved from Switzerland to Koh Samui, Thailand. New continent. New daily life. We’re focusing a lot of energy on our stray dog care project, Anje Helping Paws. And I’m now fully focused on writing and building new coaching tools, while guiding the occasional adventure abroad.

I had shoulder surgery in 2024. Came back from it. Lost weight, gained it back, lost it again. (Sound familiar?) And through all of it, the upheaval, the recovery, the rebuilding, I kept running the same experiment I’ve been running for nearly two decades in coaching: test it on yourself first, then share what works. (and cry a little over what doesn’t)
Some of you have been on my mailing list for over 15 years. Others just joined. Either way, I appreciate you being here.
So here’s an example of one simple thing that’s been working: in a HYROX session last week, I was running on fumes (as usual in the Thai heat). I started looking for different colors in the room to draw energy from, just like I wrote about in Flow State Runner 10 years ago. The colors worked yet again, giving me a surge to survive just a few more seconds, a few more pulls, a few more wall balls… (yeah, still love-hate on those)

I’m happy when taking my own medicine works. And when it doesn’t, it’s usually me and not the tool.
Oh yeah, the stray dogs. Anja and I care for a couple dozen dogs who either live on the streets or are quasi-cared for by low-income locals. We provide food, medical care, and arrange sterilization, tackling the problem both short- and long-term. I never imagined spending hours a day on volunteer work like this on a small island in Thailand, but it’s incredibly fulfilling.

Here’s what’s coming in the months ahead.
You know that moment where you’re deep in something hard and your mind just checks out? No music, no coach, nobody to push you through it? I’ve been filming something about that. Me, a camera, and the mind tools I’ve been field-testing for nearly two decades. Honest, real, with a fun workbook to go with it. (yea, workbook!) The creation phase always brings so much energy, truly lights me up.
If you’ve ever been curious about what it’s actually like to leave everything behind and start somewhere completely different — I’ll be sharing small windows into our life in Thailand and the dog rescue work. This has been a BIG leap for us.
And if you coach other people in sports or through hard things in life, you’re probably watching AI reshape your world right now. I am too. I’m working on something to help — not theory, but actual pivots and strategies for navigating what’s coming. More on this soon.
I’m not going to flood your inbox. This newsletter, Dispatches, goes out every two weeks. Each one will have something real in it. Something I hope you can use. No generic advice. Just field notes from a friend and coach who is driven to offer you a small nudge forward.
Until next time,
Jeff
